When I was a child, I loved going to the St. Louis Art Museum in Forest Park. It was right next to the zoo and we visited often. I still remember the thrill and awe of seeing Monet’s immense water lilies, paintings of Mississippi raftsmen, mosaics from Pompeii, and the mummy in its brilliant sarcophagus. All that color! All that history!
I began mosaics a few years before I retired. I taught at Nevada City School of the Arts for 25 years and always loved our art classes. Finally I decided I wanted to create my own art, not duplicate someone else’s.
Mosaics always fascinated me because it was such a durable, ancient process. I and Maria DiCintio (a fellow teacher and artist) worked on a mural of the “Little Prince” at the school because we wanted to leave behind something that would last long past our time there. It is a delight. I’m very proud of that effort.
It’s been over 10 years now that I’ve worked in mosaics and I continue to be fascinated with what you can use and create within this art form. I’m in love.
